Bandaging Your Dog or Cat

By Dr. Andrew | February 26, 2009

Dogs and Cats do seem to get their share of injuries and illness. Wounds are especially common.

Lick granulomas, areas of the skin that your pet has chosen to lick, are also common.

Bandaging can be helpful, but it MUST be done correctly. Recently I saw a dog with a homemade bandage put on incorrectly. The bandage was too tight, and his foot had swollen to 3 times its normal size.

So if your pet is ever in need of a bandage, learn how to place it properly.

Here are some tips:

Pet Leg Bandage

The most common area to bandage is the leg.

1. Clean the wound properly.

2. Apply 2 strips of white “hospital” tape to the inside and outside of the leg.

3. Apply the non stick Telfa pad to the wound.

4. Wrap the leg with gauze, beginning at the toes, but leave the toes exposed. Overlap the gauze as you wrap up the leg. Make the gauze wrap firm to keep the Pad in place, extend up to the next joint. If your dog has a wound on his paw, I would wrap above the wrist.

5. Cover the gauze with Vet Wrap or Tape. Once again make it firm, but not too firm. Keep the toes exposed to check for swelling.

Head

The other areas that may need to be bandaged include the head, as in the case of an injured ear that won’t stop bleeding.

This is best accomplished by folding the earf laps on top of the head, then wrapping gauze and tape around the head covering the ears.

Another option is to use pantyhose – I find it remains in place much better.

Keep the bandage in front of the eyes, and ensure that you can stick one finger underneath the bandage at the neck.

Bandages are effective, BUT you must apply them correctly.

Why Do Pets Get Sick

By Dr. Andrew | February 25, 2009

Why do your pets get sick?

Your pet’s body has a very complex immune system that is designed to fight disease.

Most pets are healthy, interspersed with bouts of occasional problems – on the whole they are much healthier than their owners… :)

When pets do get sick, there is a good chance that something is interfering with their natural defenses.

The key to self healing is a strong immune system.

Antibiotics may fight disease, but they don’t improve the immune system that failed to prevent the disease in the first place.

The three things that play the biggest role in keeping your pet healthy are:

1. Diet
2. Stress
3. Exercise

Diet

What your pet eats is more important to preventing disease and maintaining a strong immune system than anything else.

Dogs and cats have spent thousands of years eating wild, natural foods – it is only recently that they have been exposed to eating commercially processed, chemical laden dry kibble.

Artificial ingredients can trigger an immune response that can make your pet sick.

An example is a food allergy. Your pet may react to one of the unnatural preservatives or food coloring, causing the immune system to release a cell called histamine. This in turn can produce vomiting, diarrhea and itching.

Antibodies are proteins that your pet produces to fight disease. Your pet cannot produce an adequate antibody response to disease when she is eating poor quality, unnatural food.

Of all the things that you can do to prevent disease in your pet, diet is the most important.

Stress

Emotions in pets are intertwined with your pets health.

Emotions don’t usually cause disease, but they can weaken the body and allow illness to happen.

Stress suppresses the immune system and delays wound healing.

The bond that you feel between your pet also will affect them. If you are feeling down and negative, this can run over to your pet.

I have seen many cases where stress leads to disease.

An example is a client of mine with a Lhassa who had a severe thunderstorm phobia. She had 10 different diseases in the span of 3 years. It was not until we treated to thunderstorm phobia with a combination of natural anti-anxiety medications and behavioral training , did she finally stop getting sick.

Exercise

Your pets ancestors were far more active – they had to chase livestock, catch mice and birds, or burn calories by keeping up with their owners.

Our ancestors were far more active than we are today- they didn’t have computers and often had to grow their own food.

Pets that aren’t active will gain weight.

Common health problems of inactivity are arthritis, diabetes and heart disease.

Your pet’s immune system is not near as effective when they are overweight.

The liver is more effective in removing waste products in pets with a healthy weight.

Pets that don’t exercise are more likely to be bored, anxious and depressed – just think about how you feel when you regularly exercise compared to do nothing.

I advise a minimum of 30 minutes twice daily – this will keep the weight off and the Doctor away.

Cat Flu

By Dr. Andrew | February 20, 2009

A common question I have been asked lately is about the Cat Flu.

It’s going around, and more often than not a visit to your veterinarian will result in antibiotics. But little else.

And its a virus… antibiotics are NOT effective. In fact this approach can cause problems.

Reactions to the antibiotics can include vomiting, diarrhea and severe allergic reactions, as well as liver disease and immune mediated disease.

Resistance can develop to the antibiotic so it may not be effective when your pet needs it.

Does this Sound a little CRAZY to you? There is a better way, and I’ve included a few solutions in this article.

Cat Flu

SIGNS

The most obvious sign is a cat with a runny nose, often accompanied by swollen and runny eyes. Most cats will also be sneezing.

CAUSES

Two feline viruses are responsible for most cases of cat flu. Some cats can be infected as kittens and constantly harbor the virus, making them prone to repeated infections. In most cases, the virus will run its course in 7-10 days, so supportive care is needed.

SOLUTIONS

KEEP HER EATING. One of the best ways to help your cat’s immune system is by ensuring adequate food intake. Warm up her favorite canned food, or add a small amount (1/8 teaspoon) of garlic. If her regular food isn’t appetizing, then switch to canned tuna.

ORDER UP FLORIDA. Humidity is fabulous for easing congestion and improving breathing. Use a humidifier or put your cat in the bathroom and turn up the shower.

HERBAL. Boosting the immune system is what is most important in recovering from the flu. ECHINACEA and Lemon Balm are the most important.

The more you read, the more you can see how CRAZY our pet health care system has become.

If your pet has a virus that won’t respond to antibiotics, then DON’T give them.

But you have to be aware of ALL the options.

Pet Health Quick Fix Pill

Re: Pet Health Quick Fix Pill

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

A good morning to you, your dog or cat, and significant others.

—————————–
I WANT the Quick Fix NOW
—————————–

I was discussing a chronic health condition with a cat owner yesterday, and he asked about just getting ‘a Pill’ to STOP his cat’s chronic vomiting.

…which led me in to my little rant about conventional medicine, and the *BIG PROBLEMS* that I see with current Veterinary Medicine.

We have developed this society of Instant Gratification – we want and expect EASY and QUICK fixes – from our own health problems, to our dog and cat’s health issues.

———————————-
Quick Fixers can NOW leave
———————————-

If you are looking for a QUICK FIX pill to instantly heal your pet – please close this page and look elsewhere.

.

.

.

Still here?

O.K.- Great :-)

May of the conventional medications work rapidly, BUT they just deal with the symptoms, NOT the underlying cause. Your dog or cat will be temporarily better, until the problem pops up again, and then you’ll have to go back to your Vet for more PILLS.

Great for your Vet… and wonderful for the drug company making the pills.

BUT…not so good for your cat or dog.

———————————-
A BETTER way
———————————

Would you like to know about a *BETTER* way?

How about dealing with the underlying problem in the first place. Treating your dog or cat holistically – NOT just dealing with the symptoms.

As an example with the vomiting cat, I discussed the likelihood of a food reaction, anxiety, and making hypoallergenic food at home.

I talked about using herbal remedies for vomiting, a natural pheromone for anxiety, and specific things to eliminate in the diet.

NOT instant, BUT more likely to give your pet the long term result we are ALL looking for – an END to the Health problem in the FIRST PLACE – PLUS without ANY of the serious conventional medication side effects.

SO for those of you looking for an END to your dog or cat’s health problems – it WON’T be instant, but it is far more likely to be permanent, then go here:

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. My cat Cleo has Inflammatory Bowel Disease – he has bouts of Vomiting and Diarrhea. I have gone through the gamut of ‘conventional’ medications. They temporarily worked, but caused side effects (increased drinking and urination), and changed his behavior – he became aggressive.

The LONG TERM success happened with a herbal remedy, PLUS a dietary change. He seldom has problems now.

In this months Special Report and Video I will be revealing the TOP herbs for Vomiting and Diarrhea. You can get in on the TRIAL now for $9.37.
